Cone Collector’s Guide: What’s New 2021

Any significant news and changes in 2021 are summarised here and they will be integrated as appropriate into the next release of the main files of the Paul Kersten checklist on this website.  These main files were last updated in December 2021.

New cone Profundiconus rashafunensis from Ras Hafun, Somalia described by Luigi Bozzetti is published in Malcologia 113. Holotype 61mm not deposited but retained by author. Similar to C. neotorquatus but has a distinctive flat to recessed protoconch.

Also in the same publication , Bozzetti describes a new cone Conus tessulatus s.sp. uniformis  from  southern Madagascar Malacologia Mostra Mondiale. 113: 8-9. Holotype not deposited; retained by author.

Also in Malacologia 113, Cossignani & Allaryi introduce a new cone from the Reunion area of the Indian Ocean. Conus barthelemyi s.sp peterstimpsoni. This should not be confused with Conus peterstimpsoni  described by Cossignani and Allaryi in 2021.

Conus laccadivensis published on line by Laxmilatha, P.; Ameri, S.; Labeeb, K.; Ranjith, L.; Kathirvelpandian, A. (2021). A new species of cone snail, Conus laccadivensis sp. nov.: (Gastropoda: Conidae) from the Islands of Lakshadweep Archipelago. Regional Studies in Marine Science. 44: 101783: 1-7.

Conus ngaorum published by N. Thach in a new book -  New shells of South Asia and Taiwan, China, Tanzania. Seashells, Freshwater,Land snails. Type locality is Nha Trang area Vietnam.

Book contains 116 new species and subspecies.

Conus(Asprella) neocostatus Olivera, B., Watkins, M., Puillandre, N. & Tenorio, M.J. (2021) is described in “Hidden diversity in the Asprella clade: description of Conus (Asprella) neocostatus sp. novXenophora Taxonomy. 33: 22-29.

Conus (Phasmoconus) rokokorum (Monnier, Prugnaud & Limpalaër, 2021) is described in 

 Xenophora Taxonomy. 32: 3-17.page(s): 3, textfigs, pl. 1 figs 0-15.  This new species is from the Solomon Islands.

The ICZN code does not permit forms to be described after 1960. An invalid name; a specimen of C. tessulatus

Tenorioconus peterstimpsoni was described from Venezuela in Malacologia Mostra Mondiale. 111: 10-11. Type in Peter Stimpson Shell Museum

Two new cones from Bahia province Brasil described by Crabos, O., Oliveira, G.S.P., Almeida L.P. de & Queiroz, G.P. de. 2021 in Xenophora Taxonomy 32.  Jaspidiconus gregorioi and Jaspiciconus laudelinoi, also considered to be part of the Conasprella group. Type specimens deposited in MZSP.

Two new cones from Bahia Province Brasil  described by Crabos, O., Oliveira, G.S.P., Almeida L.P. de & Queiroz, G.P. de. 2021 in Festivus. 53(2): 109-115. Jaspidiconus tinharensis and Jaspidiconus vanini also considered to be part of the Conasprella group. Type specimens deposited in MZSP.

Two new cones from East Cape South Africa by Roy Aiken. Floraconus(Sciteconus) markpagei  and Floraconus(Sciteconus) mosterti  were described in Festivus 53(1) 11-17. Type specimens in NMSA.
